The 90 musicians selected from thousands of online auditions to create the first YouTube Symphony Orchestra will receive a special gift at their Carnegie Hall debut this month –Samsung’s S1 Mini external hard drive, engraved with the YouTube Symphony Orchestra logo, and provided as the ideal adjunct storage device for PCs and laptops whose capacity may already overflow with the world’s finest classical compositions.
The hard drives will be presented to the musicians before the YouTube Symphony Orchestra performs its maiden concert on April 15 at Carnegie Hall in Manhattan. “YouTube and Samsung both thrive on user-generated content,” said C.H. Lee, vice president of sales and marketing at Samsung Electronics’ Storage Division. “For the global online community – and for musicians especially – external storage devices are a critical lifestyle component, extending the utility of personal computers and laptops, and providing new solutions for data management.” The S1 Mini is Samsung’s 1.8-inch external hard drive available in 120-Gigabyte density. Weighing just 91gs, the light weight, compact form factor and sleek glossy casing design make the S1 an aesthetically appealing device for extra portable storage capacity. The Youtube Symphony Orchestra is the world’s first collaborative online orchestra that will connect aspiring musicians with Academy Award-winning and Olympic composer Tan Dun and world-renowned pianist Lang Lang.
The genesis of the YouTube Symphony Orchestra dates from a series of auditions held from December 1 to January 28, 2009, when musicians from around the world submitted videos showcasing their musical talents and personal playing styles. Experts from the London Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, New York Philharmonic and other leading orchestras around the world began a judging process that led to online voting by the YouTube community, and selection of the 90 YouTube Symphony Orchestra members. 
This month, the selected musicians are being flown to New York City to participate in a three-day classical music summit with Grammy-Award winning conductor San Michael Tilson Thomas and leading performers in the field, culminating in the Carnegie Hall performance on April 15. Selected video entries of musical pieces will also be mashed together to create a living YouTube symphony – a single video of memorable entrants combined into one ensemble piece – and even more entries will be displayed on YouTube homepages around the world.
