On the 26th of February I was in New Malden, Surrey and decided to meet a friend- who had just returned from Korea- for lunch.
We decided on the YOU ME KOREAN RESTAURANT:
96 Burlington Road, New Malden, Surrey KT3 4NT
Tel: 020 8715 1079
M: 07956 626744
Buses: 152 and 131 stop a few yards away; 265, X26 and 213 stop at the nearby Fountain roundabout
New Malden train station is just under a fifteen minute walk away. There is seating for sixty two people in two dining areas and a separate room which can accommodate another ten patrons. The clientele is mixed with seventy per cent being Korean. Having recently returned from Seoul myself I was looking forward to enjoying a meal in New Malden. I wasn’t disappointed as the YOU ME restaurant specialises in Korean and Korean/Chinese food. This restaurant has been reviewed favourably on numerous occasions in the Evening Standard. The Surrey Comet, Euro Journal and Eating Out have also commented positively.
The owners-HUR Young Koo and his wife WOO Ok Kyung have had almost twenty one years experience as restaurateurs- four in North London initially and over sixteen years in New Malden. They are both active members of the local community in Kingston and New Malden- being regular contributors to the Mayor’s charity appeals, the Mayor’s charity golf days as well as being involved with the Korean Festival held annually in July in Kingston. Twice a year they invite and provide meals for the elderly members of the Korean Association.
We ordered and the seven assorted dishes arrived:
JJAMPPONGA
spicy seafood noodle soup with prawns, mussels, Squid etc that I enjoyed a great deal.
CHAMPANCHAJONG
Thinner and flatter noodles with onion in a sauce made specially for this dish- a firm favourite with diners.
JJAJANGMYUN
Stir fried noodles in Chinese bean sauce- something I regularly eat in Korea.
SWEET AND SOUR PORK
Another dish I normally eat when I’m in Korea. To complement the taste slices of yellow radish and onion are also served.
FRIED CHICKEN WITH GARLIC SAUCE
Most enjoyable –the garlic sauce not detracting from the taste of the chicken.
BROWN RICE SOUP
Thick and nourishing with mushrooms and other vegetables.
SOFT TOFU STEW
One of my favourite Korean dishes.
RICE
Bowl of white rice-plain enough to bring out the flavours of the other dishes.
Accompanying the array of food served were Kimchi (pickled cabbage) and slices of Fish cake and carrot. There was a good selection of food to choose from showing photographs of every dish with the descriptions in English, Korean and Japanese and the prices clearly shown in the menus. Did I enjoy my lunch?
Absolutely- so much so that I couldn’t contemplate a dessert. The YOU ME restaurant has the most authentic Korean food that I’ve eaten in a long while and would recommend it. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and echo the positive reviews of the past.
