A two-day workshop and film show on Okinawa bringing together Japanese, European and North American scholars and research students. It will explore Okinawan identity, gender, memory, and the relationship with US bases in the context of Okinawa's four hundred year relationship with Japan, starting in 1609. The aim is to elucidate the complexity of Okinawa, as represented in films such as Untama Giru directed by a Japanese (Okinawan) experimental film maker, Go Takamine, as well as by the analysis of these topics by social scientific and humanities specialists. The screening of Untama Giru and accompanying director's talk and Q&A session, as well as a traditional Okinawan music performance, will be made available to a public audience.
