Courtesan Murasaki Shikibu's Masterpiece, Genji Monogatari or the Tale of Genji, was written in 1008, and recaptured the life of the son of the Emperor, named Shining Genji . The story of gentle, multi-talented Genji, outstanding as a singer, dancer, poet and lover gives a revealing picture of the flourishing Heian period (794-1185) and remains a cornerstone of Japanese literature. The Tale of Heike is a classic Japanese war tale, based on the actual historical struggle between the Taira (Heike) and the Minamoto (Genji) families.
Acclaimed performer Kakujo Nakamura will perform the two classic stories, accompanying the dramatic narrative with music played on the Satsuma Biwa (Japanese lute). There will also be a Champagne reception during the intermission.
